Having reviewed the changes it seems that this can only be one of two
things:
(1) Stephen's changes have a bug
(2) The original syntax code has a bug when lookup-syntax-properties is
turned off.
To eliminate (2) can you try setting
(setq-default lookup-syntax-properties t)
in your init.el file, and see if that helps. I cannot reproduce your
problems as yet.

Sorry, I must have been smoking. I had set
directory-sep-char to ?/ in my .xemacs/init.el. However while this worked
with previous versions of XEmacs, it stopped working with this version.
When I tried with xemacs -q as well as commenting out directory-sep-char, I
don't see either of the problems that I had reported.
Now the question is how did it work with the previous versions of XEmacs ?

I'm not sure, but this is the last patch that I applied to 21.4.9.
That's already in 21.4.9 Windows [3], though (I just did a diff), so
you should have seen this before.

* fileio.c (Ffile_truename): on cygwin using win32 normalize to
win32 format.
* realpath.c (xrealpath): normalize drive spec also so that dir
sep chars are not mixed on cygwin.
Adrian Aichner is reporting file-truename problems on Windows 2000, he
uses a native build AFAIK.

Yes, I use native Windows builds only.

Right, these are in 21.4.9.3 which he was using before. Pretty much
the only changes are the syntax changes.

It just seems plain weird to me.
The other thing I need to do is fix the "rc2" -> "-rc2" thing in
version.sh.
This could be messing up the net installation somehow.

I can attest to that. I attempted to reinstall XEmacs from scratch
using the netinstaller (uninstalled XEmacs and deleted it's
directories) and things got pretty messed up. My investigations found
the following:
* In setup.ini, version was 21.4.10rc2 for the executable packages
* The shortcut pointed to \Program Files...2.4.10rc2\...
* The installation files pointed to the same place
* However, XEmacs was installed in \Program Files...21.4.10\...
I had to modify setup.ini's "Version" setting to get it to install (I
think) correctly.
