Hey there...
Using the precompiled binary kit for NT (4.0 SP5),
I downloaded and installed both:
xemacs-21_1_3-i686-pc-cygwin32-b20_1-X_tar.tar.gz
and xemacs-21_1_3-i686-pc-cygwin32-b20_1_tar.tar.gz
typical un-tarring and running didn't work:
Couldn't find an obvious default for the root of the
XEmacs hierarchy.
WARNING:
Couldn't find obvious defaults for:
doc-directory
data-directory
exec-directory
Perhaps some directories don't exist, or the XEmacs executable,
/XEmacs-21.1.3/bin/xemacs.exe
is in a strange place?Cannot open load file:
/build/xemacs/xemacs-20/lisp/auto-autoloads
So I set the various emacs xxxPATH env vars to what seemed
like the right thing to me, and I still got that same message.
So I rearranged the hierarchy to match the GNU NTEmacs hierarchy,
and changed the xxxPATH vars and tried again, and now I get nothing.
No error messages, but xemacs simply doesn't run.
Here's how I've got things currently set-up.
Directory of D:\XEmacs-21.1.3
bin
etc

sounds
sparcworks

external-widget

lib
xemacs-21.1-p3
i686-pc-cygwin32

man

--- runxemacs.bat ( mostly from my gnu NT emacs startup .bat file )
set emacs_dir=D:\XEmacs-21.1.3
set SHELL=%emacs_dir%\bin\cmdproxy.exe
set EMACSLOADPATH=%emacs_dir%\site-lisp;%emacs_dir%\lisp
set EMACSDATA=%emacs_dir%\etc
set EMACSPATH=%emacs_dir%\bin
set EMACSLOCKDIR=%emacs_dir%\lock
REM set INFOPATH=%emacs_dir%\info
set EMACSDOC=%emacs_dir%\etc
set TERM=CMD
set HOME=%emacs_dir%
ļ¼ echo Using HOME = %HOME%
%emacs_dir%\bin\runemacs.exe %*
=====================================================
So, when I run that .bat file, I get a beep from
the speakers, but no emacs. runemacs.exe doesn't
even live long enough to show up on my task manager.
Is there something else I need to setup, or a different
hierarchy I should be using?
I performed the same steps with both tarballs I downloaded.
I assumed the -X version required an NT X Server, which I
don't have, so I did that one a tad less enthusiastically,
but did eventually get the same results... no emacs running.
Anyone out there get XEmacs running on NT, I'd really
appreciate the help.
