Dear Bug Team!
On my Mandrake 9.0 system, dired occassionally includes the date as
part of the file name in creating the extents. (It's easy to see when
this happens by sliding the mouse down the filenames and watching the
highlighting.) This means none of the file operations (such as
visiting or deleting) work because they try to operate on a file with
a name like "Apr 23 2002 dired-mob.elc" rather than "dired-mob.elc".
I tracked this down to the search for dired-re-month-and-time, which
is set to

...and *not* stripping the binaries. Of course, you may feel that your
interests conflict with the XEmacs people, but at least "--debug=yes"
should be enabled (see eg. [1]). Is Mandrake by the way going to adapt
RPM 4.2's "debuginfo" stuff (that'd take care of the (not) stripping
part if I've understood correctly)?
Also, you mentioned the patches, how about sending them to xemacs-beta
so people can take a look?

Definitely not; error-checking has a noticable impact on run-time
responsiveness. This only makes sense for beta testers (who are
signed up for such annoyances, and are likely to have bigger faster
machines anyway).

That would be nice, but unfortunately it adds a noticable amount to
the XEmacs core distribution footprint (about 5%). If the binaries
are stripped, there's little point in --debug, of course.
We would like unstripped binaries built with --debug, but we really
cannot expect it. Nobody else does it.

Do you have "real" development effort (a few hours) to spare to work
on this? If so, what you should do is make the internal treatment of
modifiers indirect. If you can just swap modifiers Meta and Alt, a
patch that makes all user-definable modifiers (ie, modifer bits 1-5)
configurable at build time from ./configure might be acceptable
(although one which ties Meta and Alt to be the same is not). I
believe there's already a comment in the source to the effect that
treatment of modifier bits should be run-time configurable; I'm sure
such a patch would be accepted.

Mostly tell us when you feel you need to patch XEmacs. In your list
below, none are "wrong", and the one that we can't do much about
ourselves we could at least provide the information to users who build
vanilla XEmacs sources on Mandrake (and to ourselves!).
The "PROBLEM" with Mandrake from our point of view is that XEmacs
built from our sources is noticably misbehaved on Mandrake systems
because the OEM version differs significantly from what we
distribute. And _we_ get the bug reports, which confuse the hell out
of us, because our code should not misbehave in that way on a "normal"
system.

Probably we want this in the mainstream. If it's been submitted to
xemacs-patches and turned down, maybe you and the authors want to
figure out why and make it work right?

This is already done in a forward-compatible way in the latin-unity
package (which also partially solves some of the many problems caused
by conflicts among latin-* character sets). I admit I don't think
latin-unity had been released, maybe not even written, as of 21.4.6.

This is hard; you'd almost certainly have to maintain this patch
because I don't think we can fix this problem (yes, we acknowledge
it's not right, but the right fix is only trivial for FHS-conforming
systems) in 21.4.
Still, we could put this in PROBLEMS in the form "if you build on
Mandrake, you probably want this unofficial patch for compatibility
with Mandrake file hierarchy layout". We'll still get bug reports,
but not as many, and they'll be quickly solved.

This relates to rpm-spec-mode? You should be able to put config
information that in default.el (so that users can avoid it with -q) or
site-start.el (if you want to enforce it as Mandrake policy (users can
still avoid it with --no-site-start, but that's deliberately hard to
type). If a patch is required to rpm-spec-mode, you probably need to
negotiate that with upstream authors.

I actually had already recompiled with a redhat src rpm. But
just to be sure I downloaded the source from xemacs.org and
recompiled, and I have the same problem. Here's the information on

Thanks, I don't see anything there unusual, and I don't see how any of
the patches Warly describes should affect this.
Oops ... damn ... my apologies, I must have done something wrong in my
original test, because trying it again on your example, I see it too,
now, on Debian.
Recapitulating the report for the benefit of the dired team:

The problem is dired-re-month-and-time can also match the link count -
owner - size field group, and does in your example:

But this can only happen for a "few" sizes. Ie, the year expression
is [12][90][0-9][0-9] which matches 2943.
Note that the group is missing -- is that the way ls -l works on
Mandrake? That absence is crucial, because the regexp will almost
never match the owner - group - size field group. (The owner would
have to be numerical in the range 0--39, and group symbolic. Could
happen via eg tar or a networked file system, but unlikely.) And
that's why it only happens in cooked examples on Red Hat and Debian.

It turns out this was a configuration problem on my end; see
below for more details.

The problem is dired-re-month-and-time can also match the link count -
owner - size field group, and does in your example:

But this can only happen for a "few" sizes. Ie, the year expression
is [12][90][0-9][0-9] which matches 2943.
Note that the group is missing -- is that the way ls -l works on
Mandrake? That absence is crucial, because the regexp will almost
never match the owner - group - size field group. (The owner would
have to be numerical in the range 0--39, and group symbolic. Could
happen via eg tar or a networked file system, but unlikely.) And
that's why it only happens in cooked examples on Red Hat and Debian.
It turns out one of our local files that I'm loading was
setting dired-listing-switches to "-alLsg" for some reason. The -g is
the offending flag; on Mandrake, -g means:
-g like -l, but do not list owner
while on Redhat -g means:
-g (ignored)
So that's why I'm seeing the problem only on Mandrake.
Anyway, this wasn't an XEmacs, dired, or Mandrake bug after all. (You
want to mention in the docs for dired-listing-switches that -g might
cause problems.) Sorry to bother you all, and thank you for your
assistance in resolving the problem.
