Hello Steve, All!
In my build package I want to refer to latest version number and date
of the package.
For my own private packages I use CVS keywords $Name and $Date.
It involves running
cvs tag NAME
cvs update -r NAME -kv
prior to building the package.
We agreed a while back that this process I use does not suit the needs
of the package release engineer.
Now my question:
How do I maintain synchronisity between version number and version
date between documentation, Makefile, and sources?
What's worse:
Package Release Engineer controls version number in Makefile
Package build process controls date of package release.
Developer/Maintainer needs to keep version number and date up-to-date
in elisp and texi sources.
This can't work.
What can we do?

Let me preface this by saying that I don't think I totally understand
what you are trying to do here.

Not sure, but maybe this will help:

This shouldn't be a problem at all. Don't forget that as a package
maintainer, Adrian, you only need to worry about $AUTHOR_VERSION, not
$VERSION.

Just the version number. 'date' and 'build-date' (see doc string in
above function) are both generated.

build-version-date from thme.

OK, I don't need to control $VERSION.
$AUTHOR_VERSION will do fine.

When I commit package sources I cannot put in the correct release date
since it's unknown at this point.

Is it a requirement for packages to build without cvs access to
cvs.xemacs.org?
If I could do this ...
all:: update-for-release $(ELCS) $(MULE_ELCS) auto-autoloads.elc custom-load.elc
$(INFO_FILES)
update-for-release:
cvs update -r $(AUTHOR_VERSION) -kv
... then I could use $Name in emacs lisp and texi sources.
Is this verboten?

I understand wanting to keep the version number synched and only have
to update it in one place, but why do you want to bother with the
release date?
FWIW, it would be very easy to do a bit of Makefile trickery that
creates a 'build-version.el' and 'version.texi' on the fly when
building the package. And then it would be child's play to have Build
reference those two files for version info.
We could possibly do it for the build-date as well, but I'm not sure,
I'd have to check at what point in the build process it is generated.
I've got a feeling that it would be too late to do anything with it.

Sorry Adrian, but there's no way that I am going to let you do this.
A lot of people (esp. your's truly) do not have 24/7 access to the
'net. And I very often build packages while I am offline.
We'll have to see if we can't come up with another way to do what you
want.

I agree. I have given up on the above idea.
I noted last week that I have not commited the above hunk which was in
a patch of mine.

Yep, saw that.

Have a look at what I did with './ess/Makefile', that might give you
something to work on.
