On Linux, XEmacs should get this information from the gethostname()
system or libc function, and then ask the DNS for the fully qualified

Sounds weird to me. Are these (K)ubuntu versions of XEmacs or
self-compiled? Do you get a different result if you do xemacs
-vanilla or xemacs -vanilla -no-start-file?
FWIW. On Solaris x86/x64 with 21.4.22, I have to set this variable by
hand in site-start.el
