The second argument (#<charset ascii ...> . initial) is
according to the API, so I assume the problem is with the patch. That

I gave you a patch to x-symbol years ago that should have made
x-symbol work with an unpatched XEmacs. Maybe it's time for you to
dig that out and take fixing x-charset (which is abandoned as far as I
know, and so not a good reason to change XEmacs) seriously.
Yes I know. However this second patch never worked, I recall that you
admitted you don't understand why. The issue seems that x-symbol has its
own Idiosyncrasies to put it mildly and most like nobody else than
Christoph Wedler understands it, and he left 10 years ago.
As far as I remember that was a lisp patch concerning face.el. I might
try it again but I am rather pessimistic.
Anyhow I can live with the menu bug, but not without x-symbol...:'(
