to broken directories. Is there currently a way to browse the latest source
via http? If not, what version control software would I need?

No, there doesn't seem to be. If I go to the parent (direct link
http://anonscm.debian.org/hg/xemacs/), I can access at least some of
the other public branches, but the public release branches "xemacs"
and "xemacs-beta" just seem to be missing.
Mike, do you know what's going on here? Debian seems to be as
competently run as Savannah recently. Even Tux is better (but not
enough so to be worth trying to move to).

No, I see what you see. I called them "branches" because AFAIK this
is generated like viewcvs or gitweb. Is that false?
Now, if I access, say, cedet_xemacs, I get a display of links to file
names. If I access xemacs or xemacs-beta, I get . and .. . Oops.
BTW, what is the private directory "y"?

Yes. There used to be a view generated by Mercurial itself there, but
now it's just directory content served by Apache. You're right, Alioth
*is* crappy. We should probably move. My current swamp ends
mid-August, I'll be happy to look into that then, along with migrating
the packages.

Some administrative stuff I was doing when I was setting all of this up.

WTF? Has the world decided to stop funding the major FLOSS
repositories because of the Lehmann Shock or something? Or is
Lunchpad sucking up all the available resources? I mean, doesn't
everybody and his brother use a generated view? And emacs-devel is
discussing all kinds of limits on any sane access to their debbugs
because they only have 500MB of core on the host that provides it!
So I guess for some reason Alioth just "forgot" to generate browsable

XEmacs server ... nah, too risky, but fun to fantasize about ....

That's really generous!!!! According to xe.com, a trillion ZWD is
about 2.76 billion USD. I think you could buy a whole hosting company
and whole lot more for 100 trillion ZWD. For mere .1% of that,
I can find you a good hosting company. :-)

What is left then is different private initiatives but as such they
will have low bus-factor. But with distributed version control and a
tight budget that might be our best choice?

Google offers 4GB space for Mercurial repositories to open source
projects:
