Now that Jerry James is back, I wanted to report again that big number
support appears to break something about the byte compiler when linking
(on powerpc Mac) during the first pass at creating an XEmacs executable.
The breakage first began some months ago, and I reported it then.
I tried to build today with -enable-bignum=gmp. I got the same
breakage.
My system is Mac OS X 10.4.6 (both a G4 and a G5). I compile with
gcc4.01. The error is

Right after the console says (I mean the lines below fall immediately

There must be some character alignment issue because the error string
switches the console xterm to what looks to be "line-drawing mode." And
the console has to be reset.
The error is early in linking. The linking commands run right before

Yes, it is. I believe I followed up in XEmacs-beta to say that the -Os
flag I thought was related did not seem to matter (i.e. removing it just
changed where the failure occured).

What version of the gmp library are you using?
For what it's worth, I don't get the compiler warnings you listed on
i386 Fedora Core 4, i386 Fedora Core 5, or x86_64 Fedora Core 5. FC4
and FC5 both shipped with gmp 4.1.4.

The compile I posted yesterday is 4.1.4. The one from June 2005 was
earlier, but I do not recall how earlier. I know I had to update when I
updated gnumeric.
Since no one else has reported this, I suspect it is powerPC specific.
It occurs on both my G4 and G5 machines. I do not know if it is also OS
X specific or related to gcc4.0x. However, gcc4 does issue more
warnings than did gcc3.3 or gcc3.4 on my system, and it will not build
some large well-known projects that use old C++ code. But that is not
related to the gmp failures.

badly and I've had a devil of a time getting the sources. (An upgrade
seems to have fixed the problem, in any case I now have XEmacs source,

on Panther; backward compatibility on some project seems to get broken
once or twice a week. I suspect that means big changes somewhere in
the underlying OS.

appear to be claiming that mpz_get_ui() is somehow broken; i.e., that
the function can return without returning a value. If that is true,
then you are fundamentally screwed, because we use that function in
several places. In my version of the headers, the inline version of

Okay, so this is a gcc4-specific problem then.
Incidentally, problems with GMP are not unique to gcc. I filed a bug
against ICC 8.0.066 on July 5, 2004, which has not been fixed up through
and including the current ICC 9.0.032. If you configure XEmacs to use
the union type and compile with any optimization whatsoever, ICC
miscompiles XEmacs. The first symptom of the miscompilation is that
adding small numbers together produces bignums, which leads to crashes
in the initialization code. This is ICC issue number 255632 for the
interested.
(To be fair, my initial experience with using ICC on XEmacs was that it
caused a segfault in mcpcom. I filed a bug report on that in April of
2004, and it was fixed in a release of ICC in late June. They were
quick to fix the segfault, even though they've been slow to fix the
optimizer bug.)

OK, I simply removed the 'if (__GMP_ULONG_MAX <= GMP_NUMB_MASK)' from
line 1595 of gmp.h. That stopped the warnings. Now, my loadup/dump
fails with the same type error

But I no longer get line drawing characters as the output. So I am
appending the Lisp stack trace. Perhaps, there is something in
disp-table.el that is not happy with gmp routines on this platform? I

Tiger+gcc4.0x.

What GMP are you using? I'm pretty sure I just built (on my home
machine, will check details tonight) with GMP on Mac OS X 10.4.6 with
the default gcc (I assume 4.0x), with no such problems. XEmacs
21.5.26 with one unrelated patch (already in CVS). I'm using the GMP
from DarwinPorts, updated April 5 or 6.

I wonder if you are triggering a similar bug to the icc bug that bit me.
Let's see. I am attaching the test case I sent Intel a couple of years
ago. You'll have to edit the Makefile a bit, but try it out and see if
the test program reports that you are getting bignum results. You
shouldn't be.
