(1) Does this happen starting with -vanilla?
(2) Are your Lisp libraries on a network drive?
(3) Is the Red Hat box less well-connected to the network than the
Solaris box?
If the answers are yes, no, yes, then it may be the IPv6 stuff. IPv6
_always_ does a lookup for the CNAME of localhost, and _insists_ on
doing it via external name servers (IIRC it is not possible to divert
this lookup to a local file). So if (1) your network is configured,
(2) you have remote nameservers configured, and (3) you are not
connected, XEmacs will block for #NS * DNStimeout. I believe that the
timeout in question is 30 seconds....
The Gospel According to the Prophet Martin is that IPv6 readiness is a
GoodThang[tm], and you should fix your network configuration. I don't
understand the issues, I'm just citing One Who Knows.
See PROBLEMS (search IPv6) for further discussion and instructions on
how to permanently break the legs of this feature if you want to.
If (2) is yes, then your NFS/AFS/Coda/etc may be hosed, but this is
less likely.
