Washington, DC (news agencies) - In Islam, when a man utters the words
"I divorce you" three times, then he is divorced according to family
law. However, the New York Times reported that a court in Alexandria,
Egypt has ruled that uttering the same statement in a written e-mail
message cannot bring divorce between a man and his wife.
This issue recently came about in a case that involved a woman who
remarried after receiving an e-mail divorce message from her first
husband, who after the fact, changed his mind and demanded that she
come back to him.
The judge in the Alexandria court, after spending time deciding the
proper ruling for this case, eventually ruled that Islam does not
accept electronic documents as evidence for divorce.
