One workaround is to compile with --with-toolbars=no. The toolbar

Are you sure that --with-toolbars=no doesn't do any harm? I recall some
incidence when want to use customize-option and the save button had
disappeared. But I am not sure that it was connected to toolbars or
not. I download and run the modified configuration then.
