The starting point for me was to try to understand what technical
problems there are in getting AUCTeX updated within the xemacs
packages. I'm afraid little technical answers to that question has
come out of this thread apart from that it should be a simple afair of
"move some files and edit some templates" if I remember correctly.
Well, if you want to advance the state of understanding, you could
start by getting the AUCTeX sources for the current release, building
and reporting on the process from the viewpoint of how it compares to
the XEmacs packaging process. I know you're not one of the
infrastructure developers, but you've done packaging before. AIUI,
AUCTeX was Uwe Brauer's first try at integrating a package, and it's
certainly a difficult one. I intend to try to work on this myself,
but there are a lot of things that are higher priority: restoring ML
archives, installing an issue tracking system, and possibly
transitioning from CVS to another SCM. I'm sure that Norbert, Ville,
and Steve Youngs would help to answer questions as their time permits.
