This is a known bug that affects some builds but not others (eg, it
doesn't reliably trigger on mine, although very occasionally it will),
possibly in the handoff from XEmacs to the X libraries implementing
the GUI progress meter, but we don't really know what it is yet.
Put
(setq progress-feedback-use-echo-area t)
in your init file to suppress the GUI progress bar.
