The fact that setting display improves startup speed suggests that it
is in fact the IPv6 CNAME lookup that is causing the slowdown. This
means that you must be timing out on the DNS requests.
As PROBLEMS says, if you can arrange that either (1) the DNS
connections succeed quickly (they don't need to actually find your
host, just return something from the nameserver AFAIK) or (2) you have
no nameservers configured at XEmacs startup, you'll be OK. I suspect
setting DISPLAY is more attractive, though.
I've suggested a command-line flag + configure option solution, but
that will probably take some time to implement, and will not be
released for a while. See the thread "21.4 hangs in the absence ..."
