Jupp. I'm already on to that.

I'll report what I come up with.
Appreciated. Please be aware that the "xemacs-package" target in the
top Makefile is intended for use by AUCTeX maintainers for building an
XEmacs package, not for "ordinary" users of the tarball.
That means that its operation is not described in the user
documentation, the comments in the Makefile itself might be
incomplete, and it is possible that this target will only work on a
limited number of systems (such as GNU/Linux).
So feel free to ask on the Emacs developer list (emacs-devel at gnu
dot org) for details when you get stuck. Subscribing is a good idea,
or your first postings will get delayed by moderation.
Also note that the mechanism AUCTeX builds its XEmacs package with
will hardly be useful when trying to fit AUCTeX into the XEmacs build
structure, since the whole point of the latter is to do the whole job.
So you really might be served best with starting from the "git" tree
diff I posted previously (which basically tells what goes where), and
not bothering about how AUCTeX's build system itself achieves this
particular layout.
The console output of
make TAG=11.84 xemacs-package
might also be somewhat helpful, but some stuff is done in Elisp IIRC.
It might also be an idea to contact Uwe Brauer who has so far managed
the XEmacs package of AUCTeX. But his last release from upstream
11.55 did not yet include preview-latex, and the latter has
complicated the installation procedure (even though we have smoothed
it down somewhat going from 11.80, the first version including
preview-latex, to 11.84)
