Hmm, it isn't enough to disable Xft with --with-xft=no?
But then you *cannot* use Xft.
And if you enable it with ‘--with-xft=yes’ you can use *only*
Xft and no X11 core fonts anymore.
It would be better to be able to choose this not at compile time but at
runtime.
I'm also considering turning off Xft (with --with-xft=no) in the
Gentoo
ebuild that I want to move to the main Gentoo repository shortly.
I have Xft disabled for the standard openSUSE builds but enabled for the
packages built in my M17N repository

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/M17N/).
But that means that currently you have to install xemacs from a
different, non-standard repository if you want Xft.
I personally prefer Xft a lot.
