Do you have the net-utils XEmacs package installed?
Okay I just installed it. I can both ping and resolve the name. I know
the host exists because I can ping it, resolve it and traceroute it in
a shell. Other email/news programs that I used to use have never had
problems.
The strange thing is that GNU Emacs does something similar, though on
a much less frequent basis. Assuming that VM and GNUS are from
disjoint code bases, but the Emacs' are not, doesn't it seem likely
that Emacs is somehow the source of this behaviour? I wonder if anyone
else has this problem.
Why do you set above variable to nil?
Try this:
(setq smtpmail-local-domain "intergate.bc.ca")
I'm not certain how this relates to the problem, but okay, I'll try
it. The stupid thing is that the unknown host thing doesn't happen all
the time, but sooner or later it will. I'll get back to you. Thanks
