I can't reproduce this. Can anyone else shed any light on this.

XEmacs doesn't install it's own documentation in gzipped format, but
it does support gzipped info docs out of the box. At least, it did
for me under 'xemacs -vanilla'.

Says who? It does here, and has for years (if not forever). Maybe
your problem isn't with XEmacs after all if your stand-alone info
doesn't work either?
