1) vc.el needed a patch, as documented in a posting that I found on
google from quite a few years ago.
2) The issue with grep and compile was caused by the newer version of
cc-mode. I reinstalled the earlier package and all is well.

Let me see if I can reproduce the vc.el and CC mode issues. vc we can
just apply the patch, I guess, but for CC I'm sure Alan will be
interested. If I can't reproduce, can I ask you to make a report to
him? (Alan Mackenzie <acm(a)muc.de> IIRC)
