I've been communicating with Arkadiusz via IRC and we've isolated the problem
to a dodgy patch that he was applying.
For the record, while there are build tree paths present in the installed
files, they are not used by the installed XEmacs. The majority of these paths
are in a comment at the top of custom-load.el and are only used when that file
is rebuilt. The remaining instances are there to support our bug and build
reporting code.
Arkadiusz's also discovered that our install tree is not strictly compliant
with the Linix File System Standard and, more importantly, there seems to be
some funny behaviour when you use configure's --Xdir options to make it so.
I'll add this configure problem to my lengthening todo list.
