Which, AFAICT, precludes connecting to an X server which doesn't
support the RENDER extension.
No, Xft works also on X servers which don’t support the RENDER
extension (Xft1 didn’t but that was long ago).
It is slightly slower on X servers which don’t support the RENDER
extension but not so slow that I really notice.
