Yep, did that, no go. I was actually enthusiastic about XP for half a
day. Migrating all my applications revealed that is still nowhere near a
stable OS. I'm not surprised though ;-)
Further testing showed that even if no custom el files are loaded after
a while the machine still crashed. Is this garbage collection related
perhaps? (Assuming gc takes place at a later stage when no lisp code is
evaluated on startup)

Windows XP is supposed to be a real OS, and user-mode applications like
XEmacs shouldn't be able to crash real OSs. Have you tried the obvious
and looked to see if there's an updated driver available for your card?
