i think customize is a reasonable *underlying* interface, but it needs an
easier-to-use interface on top of it.

I can't tell you how relieved I am that it's not just me.
Of course it's quite possible that we're both idiots.
Seriously, though, I've spent a fair bit of time recently trying to migrate
to customize from the set of cobbled-together startup files I'd built up
over the years. Using customize was confusing, I thought, and I'm not sure
I'm really better off than I was.
The disturbing thing is that customize seems to be neither fish nor fowl -
it seems overwhelming to a novice and too indirect for veterans.
I'm curious - how many developers out there have a near-minimal base .emacs
with all customization possible done via customize? That was my goal, and
I'm just about there, but I'm not sure I like it.

In order to save my hands, I am cutting back on my mail. I also write
as succinctly as possible -- please don't be offended. If you send me
mail, you _will_ get a response, but please be patient, especially for
XEmacs-related mail. If you need an immediate response and it is not
apparent in your message, please say so. Thanks for your understanding.
