I don't see why systems without dynamic linkage couldn't use it. I believe it works for all platforms which XFree supports but I don't know if that specifically includes Ultrix. The disadvantage (for XEmacs - it doesn't really matter for the X Server because there's normally only one instance running) is that the loaded modules aren't shared.
