 completely mule-safe.  i know -- i rewrote it from scratch to be
 this way. 
We're talking about XEmacs doprnt(), right?  Note that some libc
implementations also have a user-callable doprnt() function used by
some unclean programs.  Olivier might have thought on that one when he
questioned its Mule integrity.
