On Jareth Hein's advice, I upgraded libpng to the latest on uunet.
However, it only fixed the odd colors I was seeing. Upon a few
operations after reviewing Karl's message, XEmacs died again the same
way:
xemacs: Fatal I/O Error 14 (Bad address) on display connection ":0.0"
after 19999 requests (19997 known processed) with 1 events remaining.
No core, no other message.

I got it thanks. I've got two copies now. Even with the PNG upgrade
it is every bit as deadly as it was with the older PNG.
