This again assumes personal computer (that is, totally controlled by
single person). Random x server does not have to allow arbitrary
`xset fp+',
Which random X server does not?
and dedicated x server may not have user accessible file system at
all.
(Call such a servers legacy if you like.)
Or consider a quite modern machine with display(s) of its own, but
again used by multiple users. X servers on these displays are run by
`root' (or other special user, as opposed to regular user accounts
running x clients). Some font data are (or may be) Turing- powerful
programs (postscript). This is a strong (security) reason to set up
these servers to refuse `xset fp+' for any directory outside a list
explicitly specified by administrator. That is, currently have not an
instance of such a server readily at hand. OTOH, if faced it, would
not be surprised. Neither would object to that policy of its
administrator.
Sure, but that’s a pure hypothetical. Certain versions of AbiWord and Java,
for example, require that you modify the font path to run.
