Hi
I just got to know about genauto, a package which will generate
autoloads. It looks useful however I could not run it, since
autoload.el for emacs-21 (on which this hack relies) and the version I
use (xemacs-21.1.14) are sufficiently forked so that I cannot
understand them.
On the other hand I don't know how much has anyhow changed for
autoload withing xemacs-21.4.x (I tried it on the win32 xemacs-21.4.3
and genauto failed also).
Can anybody tell me please the difference of autoload for emacs-21 and
the latest relevant xemacs version,

What does this mean? In XEmacs, we put an "autoload cookie" on some
code, eg
;;;###autoload
(defun foo () "Demonstrate autoloads." nil)
and it automatically gets picked up by the build process, whether in
core or in a packaged library. Is that what you mean?

Not everyone uses "packaged libraries". For example, I have a
`site-lisp' directory full of goodies. I would like to be able to
create an "autoloads" file from all their autoload cookies. I'm sure
it's possible, but I never got it to work after trying what seemed
logical, so I gave up.
Perhaps genauto makes the process easier or more obvious?

Right. I'm trying to figure out what Uwe's talking about, not tell him
he wants the wrong thing. I'm thinking it might be something that

or something like that? Did you not get an auto-autoloads.el file, or
was it not being picked up in startup.el? For the latter, I suspect
it has to either be in core or on the package path.

Honestly I don't remember what I tried, I just know that it didn't
work. It might have easily been something like the above. Maybe it
required an auto-autoloads.el file to already exist? There was
*something* non-obvious about it.
The fact that I never bothered to investigate is another proof of how
little it mattered.

There was some discussion on gnus.emacs.sources about how xemacs could
use some help with autoloads performance. There was also some
makefile thing posted in response to the genauto.el message.
It appears that what genauto.el does is combine autoloads from
various auto-autoloads.el files into one file. This was based on <5
minute analysis. I guess that would save some calls to fstat.

Makes me nervous; I wouldn't want it standard. Package it and let
individual users/admins decide, fine.

I agree completely I also have such a directory and was
unable to get

the documentation in this sense. Since it
does not work for me so far, I decided to install GNU emacs 21 in some
days and then I can tell.

I do this all the time for the stuff I keep in 'site-packages'. It's
actually quite easy.

Myself, I leave that bit out and do a one-off edit of the
auto-autoloads.el file to set the package name. The file just gets
edited by batch-update-{one-}directory anyway, so your randomly chosen
name gets preserved.
A future enhancement that I keep meaning to write is for autoload.el to
look up the cwd and see if it's in a site-packages tree, and if so to
stick an invariant `site-' on the front of the computed package name.
That way you could have a package text-modes, say, in the site-packages
tree and the autoload require name would never conflict with that in the
xemacs-packages tree.

I'm sure it's possible, but I never got it to work after

I use the attached code as part of my startup process. At some point I
will probably enhance it to do this at runtime as well, while idle, but
that's not a priority.
