Dear Bug Team!
I found this problem using git mode when adding a new directory (which
isn't supported in git.el). I can reproduce the crash using the
following steps with xemacs -vanilla:
(load "emacs-simple")
C-x b *foo*
<insert a couple of lines of text into *foo*>
M-: (display-message-or-buffer (get-buffer "*foo*"))
This causes a crash in count-screen-lines on line 42 of the file.

Hi,
Some strange things in your report I'm afraid.
I found this problem using git mode when adding a new directory
(which
isn't supported in git.el). I can reproduce the crash using the
following steps with xemacs -vanilla:
(load "emacs-simple")
What is emacs-simple? I don't have it? Is that somehow related to
git.el[1] (which I don't have either.)

We don't have display-message-or-buffer[2].
So it is quite hard to recreate this problem I'm afraid.

Yes, it's related to git.el. To add a new file, git.el needs
display-message-or-buffer, which I stole from emacs-simple.el. Since
I didn't need all of the functionality of emacs-simple, I removed
everything except display-message-or-buffer.

I like it a lot. As a long-time user of pcl-cvs, git.el is a very
familiar interface to work with a git repo. Except for the crash, I
think the functionality is fairly complete, if you're used to

to fixing. (Or upgrading git.el)

I can recreate your crash. It is an assertion that fires:

Let's try that again

It probably did, and it gets removed by Mailman. Emacs Lisp source is
a text/* format -- humans can read it without anything more
sophisticated than a POSIX cat(1). application/emacs-lisp means to
process the code with the application "emacs-lisp". I just prohibit
application/* on XEmacs lists, because no application/* type (except
Gnus' wrong-headed and non-standard application/emacs-lisp) is useful
to us.
I know Gnus people think otherwise, but I don't really care what they
think.:-)

Did you byte-compile this file with the XEmacs you're using? If you
use an .elc compiled by 21.5 in a 21.4, or an .elc compiled by GNU in
any XEmacs, I wouldn't be surprised if you can crash XEmacs.

AFAIK the git mode preferred by 9 out of 10 dentists is magit.el.
That doesn't mean we couldn't offer both, but I guess I would put
priority on magit if you're asking my opinion. (Of course the mode
with a volunteer to maintain it will win, or at least get in first!)

I think it's a function we'd be better off without. The idea is that
you can pass an arbitrarily long message as a string or a buffer, and
it will either display in the echo area if short "enough", or pop up a
buffer. But the arguments are crufty, the functionality is basically
available with `message' and C-x b " *Message-Log*" RET, and probably
improving with-displaying-help-buffer and friends would be a better
way to implement the basic idea.
Of course if there's enough code using the function we probably need
to implement it in the name of compatibility.

I'm a die-hard xemacs user[1]. I don't think I've used GNU emacs since
the pre-lemacs days. I haven't used 21.4 since 21.5 came out oh so
many years ago, except occasionally on Windows. :-)

That's possible, but when I went looking for a git mode a few years
ago, magit.el didn't work for me or was different enough from pcl-cvs
that I didn't like it. (Too many years working with cvs and pcl-cvs,
I guess.)

[1] I sometimes think about and try switching, but it's different
enough from xemacs and my customizations that I don't stay. The
only functionality that I find missing is better font-lock. (SLIME
will cause xemacs to hang when I insert #+nil into lisp code. It
has something to do with missing functionality in xemacs font-lock
implementation.)

Decided to revisit magit. Doesn't work out of the box.
Requires 'view. I assume that's roughly equivalent to view-less.
Requires 'ido. There seems to be no equivalent, but the emacs version
of ido.el appears to mostly work once you fix up the defface things
like:

Well, if you don't have one yet and you can try git.el. It does
everything I want it to do (fairly limited). The only thing that's
missing is that git.el wants sdiff to handle unmerged files and I
haven't done anything about that. Oh, and also the bad bug where
trying to add a directory causes xemacs to crash. :-(

Thanks for the code and the hints. I haven't tried it out yet, but I
see now that the error with magit is caused by calling invisible-p,
which doesn't seem to exist. (Maybe I should try emacs out with magit
to see if provides something over what I get with git.el now.)

Yeah, I did find some version of sdiff, but it seems the api that git
expects wasn't what sdiff provided. I didn't investigate further, but
I do intend to, since merge conflicts do happen to me once in a while.

Ok, I tried it out. (I didn't look for a file handler or did anything
about stderr handling).
With just one more change for a call to local-variable-p with just one
arg instead of two, magit will start up and appears to run. There are
some issues of course.
If anyone else is interested, I can send you the diffs. I'm not sure
I want to use magit instead of git.el; too much motor memory using
pcl-cvs.:-)

You can put magit.el in a packages/contrib/matsl/magit package though,
making it available and cooperatively hackable to all (subject to your
permission since it's your namespace, of course -- maybe we should
create a protocol for that, such as simply creating common packages at
the packages/contrib/ leve).

I do assume that. What I wanted to point out is that there is an
intermediate step between your private file system and the official
XEmacs package repo -- the contrib repo.
Of course github or the hg equivalent is fine too.

It might be asking for trouble, include code you know causes a crash,

I haven't seen the crash in a while, but that could be because of
changes in git.el or the support. I forget now. I think it's a good
sign, since I've been using git.el everyday since then without a
problem.

No, not yet. I don't get conflicts very often so I don't get a chance
to test. And when I do, I need to get the conflict fixed right away
so that I can continue do my work.
One enhancment that I would like to make is that git.el doesn't know
about tags in git. This is annoying when you do C-u C-x v = and then
you can't do tab completion when prompted for the old (and new)
version.

OK. So git.el has been updated? I will have a look. I don't remember
but it is out there somewhere I guess. I found it the last time ;-)

It's here: https://github.com/rtoy/xemacs-hacks. I think you can grab
just git.el. smerge-mode.el was a start on getting smerge working,
but I haven't done anything with that yet.
