B DEL in XEmacs 21.2 b4/Gnus 5.6.45

I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.1, XEmacs 21.2 beta 4, Gnus 5.6.45. In console mode, B DEL in Gnus (article deletion) gives B BS undefined. In X, it works great, so does B DEL in XEmacs 20.4 (both in console and in X11). It seems like XEmacs thinks DEL and BS is all BS. I tried 'xemacs -vanilla', but DEL still behaves as BS (BackSlash). Is there something wrong with my console tty configuration?
