I just tried it and it appeared to work the first time, but when I restored the window and tried it again, I got the message "Already iconified?" in the minibuffer. Is that the symptom you've been trying to fix? If so, how is C-x C-z different internally from just C-z, which appears to work fine? Is there a clue there?
