Please confirm that your suggested change is still valid before I recompile. What is also annoying is that I use mic-paren, which makes sexpressions bold-face when I am on a parenthesis. This changes the displayed glyphs again. Most of them turn to box outlines (unknown char?). Interestingly the same XEmacs/Gnus configuration on Win32 has similar issues but the characters affected are different.
