OK, in that case you don't need it. Debian has a "rebuild everything"
policy, so they must use it, and I'm pretty sure both Fedora and SuSE
do build from CVS source. So I was assuming you do too.

That's right. There may be some buggy packages that manage to pick up
details of the build location, but the intent is that users be able to
install packages simply by untarring them `anywhere', and then pushing
`anywhere' onto load-path.
