I'd still like to have answers to these questions.
Be that as it may, this may be fixed in 21.4.9.  After fixing up
GCPROing around do_autoloads, I cannot reproduce the data corruption
in candidate-21-4.  Furthermore, if I inhibit GCing in 21-4-9rc2
(unreleased), I can't reproduce the data corruption there, either.
This doesn't prove anything, of course, but we can hope.
