Yeah, but not unprecedented. What happens is that our defaults and
auto-detection routines are often homebrew, and interact strangely.
Check config.log and see if maybe you've got a header mismatch because
of multiple versions. Also look at configure.in and see what checks
get short-circuited if you do or don't --with-png=yes.
Updating our configure stuff to 2.5x would probably help here (in the
sense that we could get rid of a lot of the homebtew stuff in favor of
documented standards, so we'd be more likely to get it right the first
time, and there would be fewer regressions).
But it's non-trivial; Andy tried once and had to revert. Didier just
threw in the towel before getting in the ring. :-)
