That seems to cure the problem. Is there any documentation that should
have clued me in to this trick?

I'm afraid that doesn't fix it for me. I've been watching the list
this
week because the problem had already been reported (twice) before Ed.
The main symptom is that XEmacs stops updating text. Background colour
seems to persist, but wherever there's text there's no updating going on
at all (for example, if I minimise and restore then I get the wallpaper
apparently showing through in stripes where there would be text.
Without subprocesses, this is a pretty crippled version! Unfortunately
the net installer that's used for Windoze installs doesn't give me the
option of regressing to a working version.
This behaviour is new to this release. Previous releases (many) have
been fine. However, I confess that I updated both Cygwin and XEmacs at
the same time so I don't know which update caused the breakage.
I have a very similar setup to Ed but with a more recent Cygwin:
source$ uname -a
CYGWIN_NT-5.1 vogue 1.5.4(0.94/3/2) 2003-09-12 23:08 i686 unknown
