[1] I had the opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese some 20 years ago.
My reaction at the time was that, if I didn't already know any
European or Asian languages, I would rather learn Mandarin than
English. I also didn't realize just how idiomatic English is until I
started trying to translate my English thoughts into spoken Mandarin.
