The last time FHS conformance came up, it was argued that much of
the
nonconformance in the default configuration was deliberate. In
particular, the way that FHS spreads stuff across the whole system
conflicts with the preference of Mac OS X, Windows, and many /opt
users for an application hierarchy that is not unnecessarily wide and
deep and contains only that application's components. I suspect that
Mike Sperber will have rather strong opinions on proposed changes, so
please make an effort to get his review of any patch that changes
default behavior.
FHS conformance would be nice, but it's a lot of work. (A lot more
than you think, anyway.) I once had it going, but then some changes
that had been made to configure.in at the time killed all that. Some
day, when I'm feeling sufficiently masochistic to deal with &"!/($
autoconf, I'll try to resurrect that work.
