Hm, I sent this a couple of hours ago with M-x report-xemacs-bug, but
for some reason it hasn't trickled through yet. Sorry about the
possible forthcoming duplicate.

Subject: [Bug: 21.4.13] fontifying is sloooooow
Reply-to: scop(a)xemacs.org
--text follows this line--
================================================================
Dear Bug Team!
Fontifying anything with 21.4.13 is *very* slow, the progress meter
flashes a lot and seems like practically nothing is happening. By
pressing and holding Ctrl-C for a couple of seconds, the fontification
actually completes.
This is a Red Hat 9 box. 21.4.12 built with exactly same options
and setup doesn't exhibit this behaviour.
The gcc is "gcc version 3.2.2 20030222 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.2-5)" and
glibc is "glibc-2.3.2-27.9".
See end of this mail for a backtrace produced by:
1) gdb /usr/bin/xemacs | tee debug.log
2) run -q aclocal.m4 (aclocal.m4 is from the 21.4.13 tarball)
3) M-x font-lock-fontify-buffer
4) [The flashing progress meter and slowness happens here]
5) kill xemacs from another window
6) bt
Let me know if there's something more I can do to help debug this.
I have the built RPMs handy, will make them available on request.
