I checked that the easymenu.el file that comes GNU Emacs
is newer than the one from XEmacs and has the above functions.
Can I replace XEmacs easymenu.el with the one from GNU Emacs
without any surprises? Or does it have to be modified

There's about 0% chance that it will work. On the other hand, those
two functions are really not necessary.
Also SML-MODE uses the generic.el file from GNU Emacs.
XEmacs does not distribute this file. Could it be added
to the collection of packages distributed with XEmacs?
And 3.9.5 will not use generic.el any more (it's just as easy to use
Both 3.9.3 and 3.9.4 were supposed to work on XEmacs out of the box
and in both cases, I messed up like a beginner. I have to fix it
