I'm actually contemplating the same thing for Gentoo. Currently we still
only provide XEmacs 21.4.21, but with UTF-8 becoming more and more the
standard for text files it seems that 21.5 would be a better option for
many people despite being beta.
Yes, that’s why I switched to 21.5.x in the SuSE packages. The bad
UTF-8 support in 21.4.x is a showstopper nowadays. Although 21.5.x is
beta, it nevertheless works much better in most respects compared to
21.4.x. At least in my experience.
