I think we should take this feedback from a user serious.
We do.
RT(latest)FM, which, unfortunately, is only available in CVS (the
online manual hasn't been updated for some months).
The "Glyphs" chapter in the lispref manual now contains examples on
how to use images. This part was added after Herr Kastrup's initial
rant on the confusing "image support in XEmacs", and is based upon a
posting where I replied to his complaints (WITH EXAMPLES).
Unfortunately, he does not seem to have read it (I only posted it in
comp.emacs.xemacs as a reply to his rants, and did not email him a
copy).
