Problems generally occur when there are differences of
opinion about whether a library is a third-party
library. (There have been cases where a library is in
GNU Emacs, in an XEmacs package, and also the bleeding
edge version is independently developed and distributed
in Debian.) AFAICT the Debian maintainers of such
packages rarely do "due diligence" to ensure
compatibility with all the Emacsen distributed by
Debian. Instead they make sure their preferred
platform is well supported, and depend on upstream
efforts for compatibility. But if upstream were always
doing such a great job, there would be no need for
Debian. :-)
It is my impression that debian folks prefer GNU emacs of
Xemacs (at least at the developer level). Ispell had
precisely this problem. The ispell version for GNU emacs and
Xemacs have diverged quite a bit over the years however
debians configuration is such that xemacs does not use
ispell from its packages system but one provided by the
debian package _dictionaries-common_, which uses the version
for GNU emacs..
Look what is loaded into a Xemacs version compiled by debian
(ubuntu) [1]
and in the 10.04 release there must be hidden somewhere deep
the source of my comint problem :'(
