Hello
As I said in an earlier message, the newest version of
matlab + matlab.el only works with the comint version found
in xemacs-base 2.10.
I have tried that so far in xemacs-21.4.21 (Kubuntu 8.04 and
9.04) and 21.5.29 compiled by myself.
However today I tried out xemacs-21.4.22 of Kubuntu 10.04
and there I could not load that specific comint version. I
obtained an error message which I attach.
I could circumvent the problem by compiling the 21.5.29
version I posses but I am puzzled, what is the source of the
problem?

Sounds like a (K)ubuntu-specific problem, and it could be anything.
Best to ask on Kubuntu channels, and to find out if they have any
patches to XEmacs in their distribution. Unfortunately, few distros
seem to have a policy of asking package maintainers to stay in touch
with upstream; I don't even know who the Kubuntu maintainer is.

You are right, sigh. I started xemacs -vanilla and could
load comint.elc.
(K)ubuntu (and Debian) have the annoying custom of sharing
files between GNU emacs and Xemacs (most likely to "save"
resources). That for example happens with ispell and causes
more problems than benefits. I bet here it is similar, so I
have to search for the culprit. Or better I do what you and
others have recommended for some time, switch to 21.5 :-D.

Oh dear! Please tell me that is not common in other Linux distros like
RHEL. That would be a disaster.

Since XEmacs is not in RHEL, there's no problem. :-) XEmacs is
available in at least one RHEL add-on repository, namely EPEL.
Incidentally, I'm the Fedora maintainer, and I can assure you that no
file sharing goes on there, either.

Well, in theory they're only supposed to be sharing source files for
third party libraries, which is no different from what happens with
stuff you get from emacswiki, etc.
Problems generally occur when there are differences of opinion about
whether a library is a third-party library. (There have been cases
where a library is in GNU Emacs, in an XEmacs package, and also the
bleeding edge version is independently developed and distributed in
Debian.) AFAICT the Debian maintainers of such packages rarely do
"due diligence" to ensure compatibility with all the Emacsen
distributed by Debian. Instead they make sure their preferred
platform is well supported, and depend on upstream efforts for
compatibility. But if upstream were always doing such a great job,
there would be no need for Debian. :-)

It is my impression that debian folks prefer GNU emacs of
Xemacs (at least at the developer level). Ispell had
precisely this problem. The ispell version for GNU emacs and
Xemacs have diverged quite a bit over the years however
debians configuration is such that xemacs does not use
ispell from its packages system but one provided by the
debian package _dictionaries-common_, which uses the version
for GNU emacs..
Look what is loaded into a Xemacs version compiled by debian
(ubuntu) [1]
and in the 10.04 release there must be hidden somewhere deep
the source of my comint problem :'(

else entirely) is likely to hit XEmacs even worse than it hits Emacs.

build with XEmacs in pkgsrc, even when upstream actively supported the

Hm. It's been years since I actively worked on XEmacs on NetBSD, but
I don't recall having problems with 3rd party libraries. Of course,
since I was an active XEmacs developer, maybe there were lots of them,
all trivial so I forgot....

Debian packagers, so they can adjust from trying to save now-less-
precious-bytes-of-diskspace to making the various emacsen and packages
