dired.elc problem in dired-read-dir-and-switches

Don't know what triggers this: Trying to use C-x d (dired) in emacs-version "21.0 \"Corsican\" XEmacs Lucid" leads this After (load-file "/export/home/tmp/packages-21.0/lisp/dired/dired.el") dired works again. This seems yet another instance of those funny elc problems I've been having with Gnus. This happens with dired-version "7.9". Any clues?
