Yeah, I figured nobody would know who the mail was from if I stuck it at the
end of such a long message...

APA> That's a good point.
I made another pass through my ~/emacs directory and zapped a lot of stuff I
either never use anymore or that have more recent versions in XEmacs (like
tramp).
Martin> Another point is that his xemacs is compiled on OSX version

APA> Skip, could you take a look at this possibility?
Kinda weird, but I took a look. When I got my Powerbook it came with a
10.2.1 CD, which I immediately used to update the system (before I did any
fink stuff), so I don't think I would have built it under 10.2.
Still, I tried "fink update xemacs xemacs-sumo-pkg" this morning. This
failed sometime late in the install. Rather than pursue it, I deleted the
fink xemacs*, then downloaded the 21.5.9 tarball and the sumo package and
installed from source. The install was uneventful, but the result is the
same:
*ftp admin@localhost* seems not a pty. Kill? (y or n)
APA> What about this from the original mail?
APA> ("-i" "-u" "-g" "-v" .
"-A")
APA> Wrong type argument: characterp, "-i"
Red herring. I originally muffed the append of the -A flag to
efs-ftp-program-args.
APA> This problem was probably just an incorrect customization which is

Just an earlier setq.
I'm trying a "fink update-all" now (which looks like it won't update
anything significant) and ran a MacOSX software update (just stuffit
expander was updated). Once that's complete I'll try rebuilding.
Last night I tried stepping through (efs-start-process). It appears that
the ftp program exits almost immediately after startup.
