Precisely! Jake wants to see the author-version of the already
installed package. And the only way to do that is to store it some
place where it won't be overwritten by the package-index file.

Yes.
The information displayed by `pui-display-info' is confusing. It
should probably spit out something like...
Installed upstream ver: y.yy.y Available Upstream ver: z.zz.z
...to the minibuffer, and a whole heap of other stuff to the
balloon-help frame.
Then it would be a good idea to map 'm' to a function that displays
the package's maintainer.
