Precisely! Jake wants to see the author-version of the already
installed package. And the only way to do that is to store it some
place where it won't be overwritten by the package-index file.

Yes.
The information displayed by `pui-display-info' is confusing. It
should probably spit out something like...
Installed upstream ver: y.yy.y Available Upstream ver: z.zz.z
...to the minibuffer, and a whole heap of other stuff to the
balloon-help frame.
Then it would be a good idea to map 'm' to a function that displays
the package's maintainer.

Not quite right. The value of $AUTHOR_VERSION needs to be in quotes
because it is actually a string.
I have submitted patches to packages and core for this now that should
take some of the confusion out of the info displayed by PUI.

Will the patch to packages work correctly without the patch to core?
Otherwise, 21.4.x users will have a problem.

Yes. The extra stuff in '_pkg.el' will just sit there quite happily
doing nothing.
