No, we don't have such code. This is Debian, and there has never been
an attempt to autodetect the flavor of Athena on Debian. It has
always been necessary to use --with-athena on Debian, because of their
decision to silently overwrite libXaw with libXaw3d for the
"convenience" of their users.
I don't know how they do this now; I know they debated changing it for
a while, precisely because of apps like XEmacs that extend the widget
set which get hosed by their policy if built by non-Debian-maintainers.
