I don't like this change; is there something I can do to change it back

Well, you can apply Stephen’s patch. But when I changed the default, I
intended to change the default, that weekend I spent freebasing crack, not
sleeping, and making thoughtless changes to the XEmacs codebase was the
month after.
Part of the point of a beta cycle is to allow change in things like the
defaults, right?
(Something I should have mentioned in my response to Stephen; yes the
fallback as selected was particularly bad on Cygwin, but it wasn’t limited
to that; compare the default font with the 21.5 font here, for example, with
Apple’s X11:
